    A Unique Collaboration

Each handmade mate gourd is unique due to the production style of our collaborator, Ildikó Károlyi. We use the design as a guideline but allow for a 15% variation in styling between each cup, allowing the cups to form naturally as they are being turned, shaped, and heated.

    The Bariloche White Name

This beautiful handmade stoneware yerba mate gourd resembles the snowy peaks of the Bariloche region in Argentina, known for its tranquility and timeless beauty. Take a sip and relax!

The Making of the Bariloche Ceramic Gourd

    Overview

The Bariloche Ceramic Gourd is a unique, handcrafted piece that takes approximately two weeks to complete. Each gourd is crafted with care, resulting in subtle variations that make every piece truly one of a kind.

    Materials

    • Food-safe clay (ISO 6486), designed for everyday use.

    Crafting Process

    1. Wheel-Throwing and Shaping: Each gourd begins with wheel-throwing to shape the piece, followed by careful trimming to refine its form as the clay sets.
    2. Initial Glazing and Bisque Firing: Once the clay is firm, a thin glaze is applied to the rim and allowed to dry before undergoing the initial bisque firing in a kiln at approximately 1832°F (1000°C).
    3. Secondary Glazing: After cooling, a second glaze is meticulously applied to the interior and halfway down the exterior, leaving the lower clay body exposed for a striking contrast.
    4. Final Firing: The final kiln firing is done at around 2246°F (1230°C) and lasts for 10 hours.
    5. Cooling: Each gourd then undergoes a 24-hour cooling period to ensure durability.

    Final Result

    • A glossy, crystalline glaze that blends seamlessly with earthy rim tones.
    • A beautiful contrast between the glossy glaze and the natural matte clay body.
    • Vitrified clay, making the gourd waterproof and dishwasher-safe.

The Bariloche Ceramic Gourd is not just functional but also a beautiful expression of traditional craftsmanship, designed to be enjoyed for years to come.

Will my gourd look exactly like the picture?
The quick answer is “mostly”. We aim to keep the gourds about 85% consistent with the design but the handmade nature of the production allows for color and shape variations. Each gourd is unique and one of a kind.

How do I wash ceramic mate gourds?
For long-term usage, it is best to hand wash ceramic mates. Machine washing will not destroy the mates but it may cause the colors to fade over time.

    Are ceramic gourds fragile?
These stoneware mates are strong but they are still made of clay and will most likely chip, crack, or break if dropped more than a few feet from the ground.

When does the yerba mate expire? All the yerba we ship has at least 12 months of shelf life before it expires.

How long will this last me? If you drink one mate per day (about 40g of yerba), 500g of yerba will last you about 12 and a half days and 1000g is about 25 days. My method is to plan for 2 bags of 1kg yerba per month.

How much caffeine is in yerba mate? About 80mg of caffeine per cup however the amount varies based on whether you are drinking using traditional or mate cocido prep methods.

Where should I store yerba mate?
Store in a dark, dry, and cool location like inside a cabinet.

How do I keep the yerba mate fresh?
After the bag is opened, you can either store the yerba in a sealable container or use a rubber band to keep the bag closed. Check out our yerberas and dispensers for optimal storage!
