Ballena Deep Steep Tea Infuser

Cold brew, the easy way. Load the steel cylinder with loose leaf, hook it over the rim of a pitcher, and let it steep in the fridge overnight. In the morning you lift it out, the leaf comes with it, and a whole pitcher of cold brewed yerba mate is ready to pour.

A pitcher, ready by morning
Set it before bed and let the cold water do the slow work. You wake up to smooth, cold brewed yerba mate, ready over ice.

It hooks on and waits
The chain and hook hold it against the side of the pitcher, fully under, easy to lift out. No fishing around, no mess.

Brews anywhere you do
Drop it into a thermos with leaf and water and the same cold brew comes with you. Nothing locks together, so your thermos stays a thermos and the Ballena stays the Ballena. Two good things, not one compromise.

Its own place to rest
When the steeping is done, the included drip tray gives it somewhere to land and keeps your counter dry.

Screw it shut, leave it be
The lid screws down so the leaf stays put and the water does the rest.

The Ballena name
Ballena is the Spanish word for whale. It sinks below the surface to steep, and the fine perforations echo a whale's baleen.

Material: Food-grade stainless steel.
Dimensions: Height 3 in, diameter 2 in. Weight 41 g (about 1.4 oz).
Leaf capacity: About 25 g, which sets your water ratio.
Lid and chain: Screw-on lid with a chain and hook.
Drip tray: A small tray to rest the infuser on when it is out of the pitcher.
Fits: Designed to sit inside pitchers and thermoses, including our Cerro Torre 18oz and Cerro Fitz Roy 32oz.
Mesh: Hexagonal perforation over a fine mesh that holds fine-cut yerba mate.
Dishwasher: Dishwasher safe.
In the box: Ballena infuser, chain with hook, and a stainless steel drip tray.

What can I brew in the infusers?
Any loose leaf. Yerba mate, loose leaf tea, and herbal blends all work, including our own Salta Sunrise hibiscus yerba mate blend and Salta Sunset caffeine-free herbal blend. The mesh is fine enough to hold yerba mate, which is milled smaller than most teas, so grit stays out of your cup.

How much should I use?
Enough to fill the infuser without packing it down tight, so the water can move through the leaf. Each infuser lists its capacity on its own page, and you adjust from there. A little more leaf makes a stronger cup.

How do I care for and clean it?
There is nothing to cure or season, so you can use it from the first brew. After brewing, tip out the spent leaf and rinse it under warm water. A soft brush clears anything caught in the mesh or the perforations. When it needs a deeper clean, it is dishwasher safe.

Is this meant to replace a mate gourd?
No. A gourd and bombilla is the traditional way to drink mate and the best way to share a round with friends. An infuser is for the moments a gourd was not made for, like a quick cup at your desk or a batch you brew ahead. Different job, not a replacement.
