Care
Handwash only. No curing is required, but we recommend rubbing the gourd with mineral or coconut oil and letting it sit for 3 hours. Wipe off the excess to help seal pores and enhance the grain. You can repeat this as needed to maintain the wood. See FAQs tab for more tips.
Will my gourd look exactly like the picture?
The quick answer is “mostly”. We aim to keep the gourds about 85% consistent with the design but the handmade nature of the production allows for color and shape variations. Each gourd is unique and one of a kind.
How do I cure the wooden gourd?
We recommend rubbing the exterior wood with mineral oil or coconut oil and letting it sit for 3 hours. Gently wipe the mate with a towel to remove the excess oil. This should help seal some of the natural pores.
How do I maintain the wooden gourd?
To maintain your wooden mate, try not to leave yerba in the mate once you finish drinking from it. Gently wash the mate and dry it after each use. Let it dry with the opening facing up to allow for good airflow. Do not leave it soaking in water to avoid splitting and mildew. After multiple uses, feel free to rub mineral oil on the exterior and let it sit for about 3 hours. Remove the excess oil after by gently wiping it down with a cloth or a paper towel. Your mate will have a nice renewed shine.
When does the yerba mate expire? All the yerba we ship has at least 12 months of shelf life before it expires.
How long will this last me? If you drink one mate per day (about 40g of yerba), 500g of yerba will last you about 12 and a half days and 1000g is about 25 days. My method is to plan for 2 bags of 1kg yerba per month.
How much caffeine is in yerba mate? About 80mg of caffeine per cup however the amount varies based on whether you are drinking using traditional or mate cocido prep methods.
Where should I store yerba mate?
Store in a dark, dry, and cool location like inside a cabinet.
How do I keep the yerba mate fresh?
After the bag is opened, you can either store the yerba in a sealable container or use a rubber band to keep the bag closed. Check out our yerberas and dispensers for optimal storage!
